Profile:Alena entered the sociology department at UNM as a graduate student in 2013. Originally from Maryland, she received her B.A. in sociology from Pomona College in Claremont, California. Her research interests include the Sociology of Health and Illness, Race and Ethnicity, Mental and Behavioral Health, and the Sociology of Gender and Sexuality. Her thesis investigated the role of social network ties in promoting or inhibiting the development of non-normative sexual identity in adulthood among individuals who reported same-sex attraction in adolescence.
