We write to acknowledge and denounce the killing of another Black man in Minneapolis, Daunte Wright, at the hands of the police. Only miles away from the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd, this is yet another example of racist police brutality against an unarmed black man. We join the community in mourning Wright’s loss and reiterate that over-policing and police violence against black and brown communities must end. This event is a stark reminder of the urgency of continuing to work towards systemic change, in this case, by critically reimagining policing in this country. We stand with members of the community and the families of Daunte Wright and George Floyd in this tragic time.
