Congratulations to Sofia Locklear, UNM sociology PhD student, who has been awarded the American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship for next year!

Sofia’s dissertation explores the social construction of white identity among individuals who work with American Indian and Alaska Native issues and peoples. Her work is an important extension to the social science research on whiteness and also an incredible contribution to the sociology of Indigenous peoples and Native Nations. The dominant literature in Indigenous sociology has focused on the construction of identity among Indigenous peoples and not how non-Indigenous identities use Native peoples to form their racial identities. Sofia’s dissertation fills this important gap.
